Children of mine,
Good morning, evening, or afternoon, and welcome to the last English class you'll ever take as a high school student!
Some other key notes:
+ With very few exceptions, all work in this class this semester will be submitted to Turnitin.com - even work that you've already posted publicly here, or written by hand in class. Your Turnitin.com class ID is 6859642, and your enrollment password is B2B2.
+ If you're unfamiliar with posting - either technique-wise or etiquette-wise - check this thread for some fantastic examples.
+ If you don't know how to leave a post on these blogs (how to log in, etc.), click "Continue Reading..." at the bottom of this thread.
+ Once we begin submitting assignments to Turnitin.com, please remember to upload your documents in a Turnitin-approved format (.doc, .docx, .rtf). Turnitin will not accept OpenOffice documents, although I can open them on the school's computer if you need to submit via e-mail. Please avoid submitting work to Turnitin via copy-and-paste; doing so strips your assignment of MLA formatting, paragraph breaks, and so on.
Also, when submitting work in this class via Turnitin (no headers necessary on blog posts), your MLA-formatted header will always appear in the upper left corner of your page. It looks exactly like this:
First Name Last Name
World Literature - Period #
27 January 2014
Notice that you do not use an honorific (Mr.) with my name; that there's a space before and after the dash in the third line; that you'll fill in your period number yourself; and that the due date (which you now use in your headers) is written in a Day Month Year format. (I do not care whether the header is single- or double-spaced, but proper placement is important.)
First Assignment of the Semester
Take the semester goals you began today in class, type them up, and submit them to the blog! Make sure you respond to at least two of your classmates as well - ask them questions, tell them stories that their goals made you remember, etc.
The typewritten document is due to both the blog and Turnitin.com (no hard copy necessary) by 11:59pm on Monday, January 27th.
Write well, and good luck.
For Those Unfamiliar With Posting
In order to post in a given thread, you'll follow a couple of basic steps.
First, head to portal.ausd.net and log in via your usual student ID and password. (See me if you have no idea what your password is.)
Then, instead of clicking on the "Blogs" icon, simply type this page's URL into your address bar.
Once you've done that, read the entire post. If it's all on the blog's front page (unlike this entry), just click "Comments (#)" at the bottom of the thread. That will shoot you over to the proper page.
If you have to click "Continue Reading '____________'" (a la today's post), click away, then scroll to the bottom of the page after you've finished reading the entry. You'll see the comment field there. Write what you want, click "Submit," and you're good to go!
If you're making multiple comments, you'll need to return to the blog's homepage before you make another one. Just go to the top of the page, click "Last Minutes and Lost Evenings 2014," then head back into the thread each time you want to post. (I don't know why the software only lets you post once per thread visit, but it's been over six years and I haven't figured out how to fix it.)
One other odd thing to notice: In a normal thread (comments aren't allowed in this thread, but they are in the examples I link to at the bottom of this post), you'll have the option to choose between displaying comments in either "Linear" or "Threaded" Mode. You can select this just above where the first comment replying to my original post begins.
It's critical that you select "Threaded Mode" before making comments. When you're replying to someone else, only Threaded Mode allows you to attach your reply to the original work. Otherwise, we just end up with a jumbled thread of confusingly mismatched entries.
It sounds like a lot of work, but again, it'll be old hat to you before you know it.
Also, for whatever reason, the commenting field doesn't include editing tools - spell-checkers, etc. Protect yourself by writing in Microsoft Word (or some comparable word processor) if you want to avoid mistakes you already know how to avoid, such as mispellings, punctuation errors, homonym switches, and the like. Make sure you re-read your comment before posting, because the blog doesn't have an editing feature once you click "Submit."

I have spent 4 days studying high school, trying to figure out what am I going to do in my future. Through these years, I've decided that I want to be a doctor. However, I still didn't decide which kind of doctor I’m going to be.
I got 20 weeks left in high school, and quite frankly I’m terrified! Now since I’m closer to graduate, I go back and think that did I make the right choice by choosing to be a doctor? Is it going to work out?
I want to improve myself before I go out for college and start off my life as an adult. There are many things that I want to learn before I set off to college. For example, I want to improve my English, which mean I want to lose my annoying accent. I also want to be a really good writer, because I know someday I will have to write an essay for a job application and I don’t want to stink at it. When I’m 80 years old I want to be known as a man who has done it all. The problem is everything I want is so expensive! So my plan is when I get out of PCC and graduate from UCLA, I’m going to be a surgeon who gets loads of cash at the end of the months.
The truth is, money isn't the only thing i wanna have in the future. i want to make my parents proud, they sacrificied so much for me and my siblings and i really wanna pay them back by making them proud of me. My parents and my future kids were the biggest motivation that made me wanting to be a doctor, because I want to provide a better future for my kids and take care of my parents when they are old.
you have a good goal, and I hope one day you could achieve it.
Becoming a doctor is hard, but I believe there is nothing one cannot do if one tries hard enough.
What’s my goal before I graduate in high school? I started playing piano when I was in elementary school, spend almost nine years. I practiced hard during those years, and passed each level exam in order to move forward, until I decided study aboard in America. Even though I have practice piano in my aunt’s house after I came to America, but I still want to learn other different finger methods and famous musical score with piano teacher. My goal now is to keep practice piano, and find a piano teacher before graduate in high school. I want to pass my next piano level exam, and get this higher certificate to understand how well I do on it, or need to improve in somewhere of that mistakes.
In this semester before graduation, I also have another goal that wants to do it, and plan in my head many times. I want to find a cool work, whether it’s in restaurant to wash dishes or a waitress. My purpose is to experience the different life except study. It’s not I want to gain some wage, but try to learn how a perfect time worker work hard on their job, and how the boss manage his restaurant. At same time, I think to manage my time correctly before I left high school is a smart way, and I can also learn from my job and study well on my schoolwork together, perfectly.
Furthermore, learning English always the main part in my life and in my mind. However, I still want to learn to speak Cantonese well. There’s an interesting story about why I want to learn, and which of my life is connect to Hong Kong and Cantonese really closely. I discover this interesting thing after I come to America. I have lots of friends that speak Cantonese, and some of them come from Hong Kong. When I start listening Cantonese from my friends, I recall four of my cousins and uncles, aunts are come from Hong Kong, whom they speak Cantonese well. This encourage me want to learn to speak with them because of this marvelous fate. I have the basic ability of listening that learns from my friends. Now, I want to achieve my third dream to speak Cantonese that used in everyday life, at least learn to speak some special terms before the end of my senior year.
Emily. I hope you could communicate with us by using Cantonese in the future.
I'm one of your friend speaking in Cantonese all the time and I promise I will help you to finish your goal! On the other hand, your situation is same as all of us, learning a different language other than our own language outside of our own country. I hope one day we can speak English fluently like Mandarin
Senior year is the most meaningful time for me because it’s my last year in high school. I will be graduate from high school later soon on June. It’s also the most exciting time for me. Therefore, I want to make my senior year become more unforgettable. There are some goals I want to do before graduate from high school.
My first goal is to get the driver’s license. Some of my friends are already get it for prepare to go to college. I want to get it during this semester. If I don’t get the driver’s license, then I can't go to college. I don't want to get there by bus. Hence, I want to get my driver’s license in the near term, and I also hope I could pass driver’s test on the first try.
I would like to hang out with my friends in the free time, and I want to go to travel with my friend. This is my second goals during this semester. We can go to San Francisco, Santa Barbara, and San Diego, etc. No matter where we go. Even a weekend or a day will be fine. I just want to travel with my friend in my senior year to make some wonderful memories. Spring break might be the best travel time to have fun with my friends. It also can be an eye-opening experience.
Volunteering is my next goal that I want to do before graduating. It might be a meaningful activity because I could help others. To do some volunteering also could make me feel good. I have never been a volunteer before, so I want to do it once during this semester to be able to gain some experience.
I’m also want to improve my English such as to become a better speaker and writer because it will help me to do well in college. However, I would like to enjoy my senior year in high school and accomplish my goals at the same time before I graduate from high school.
The overriding feeling I get from volunteering is that it is just great fun, too.
There are many times in my life that I always ask myself what I am going to do
or to be when I grow up, and I think a lot of jobs and careers, I realize that I’m really
interested in music. When I was in kindergarten, I went to a music studio and love the
sound of the piano, so I ask my mom to let me learn piano. That’s when I started learning music, and after years and years learning, I realize music makes me happy. Every time when I’m in a bad mood, I will listen to music or play instruments to make me feel better. There are sometimes when I was practicing piano and stuck on some song that I just couldn’t play it well, that makes me want to give up. But I always tell myself not to give up if you’re doing something that you really love, and I want to do it better and make everyone proud of me. And for years by years leaning piano, it’s like a part of my life. And when I came to America, I already know what I am going to do in the future- to be a music teacher. So when I came here, I started learning cello and piano at the same time because I wanted to study music when I go to college. My goal in high school right now is to improve my English in speaking, writing, and listening, and also improve my music skills. And after I graduate from high school I will go to community college and try to apply for music schools. And I hope one day I could be a music teacher and have my own music studio, maybe I could even have a music group and we could perform everywhere all over the world. My parents let me came to America to have a good education and better future, so I have to do something to let them know what they do for me is worth it. That’s my goal in the high school and my future, and I hope someday I could achieve it.
You have a good goal, and I hope one day you could achieve it.
I'm so glad to heard that you are already find out what you really want to be in the future because I still need some time to figure out. I think you will be a good music teacher in the future.
-When this second semester is over, first of all I wish I can become a good driver. I've just got my licence, because of that I still can't drive welly even though I've passed my driving test. Many people have got very scared by my driving skill when I drived them, so I really want to improve it. Secondly, I wish I have already found a part time job. Not only that I want to have some work experiences, but also I don't want to always ask my parents for money to buy stuffs that I want. However, I'm 18 years old now, I think I should start to earn my own money and it is my turn to give money to my parents to buy things that they want. Finally, I hope I can grow about one more inch taller. I'm the shortest in my family. It is funny that both of my parents are not short, same as my sister and brother. Now I am around 5.2 ft. I didn't wish that I can grow as tall as my sister or my parents, but I just want to grow 1 more inch taller, so I won't look too short compares to others.
Yes, we always need to remember what our parent give us and one day we can thank them for their love and care. I hope someday I can make them feeling proud of me.
you will be a good driver when you drive more times, give you the best wish. Fighting!
You can do it, just practice little more, drive is not that hard.
I already spent almost four years in America and I have not learned how to use English very well yet. Language learning is easy for some people, but it is defiantly not for me. It is so hard and it seems going to take forever to learn how to use it perfectly. I am going to graduate from high school in five months, and I already started to take class in college, I was so worried that the papers I wrote in class might seemed immature. My goal before graduate is to at least have some improvements in speaking and writing English, so that I could do better in college. Another thing that I want to do before graduate is to figure out what am I going to do for living, not specific but a general direction. My family in my country is expecting me to be something like a pharmacist or a white-collar worker, but I just don’t feel like it, it is so boring. I don’t think that I am the kind of person who is good at learning from books. I don’t want to spend my whole college years and the countless years after that on something that I have no passion with. I want to learn something that I am really interest in, but the things that I am really interest in could not guarantee me a good job. I need time to figure out what I am going to do, and hopefully, I could decide it before my graduation.
I think you should follow you heart to learn something or do something you are really interest in. Life will become more meaningful by following your dreams. I hope you could do whatever you want.
I think you should follow you heart to learn something or do something you are really interest in. Life will become more meaningful by following your dreams. I hope you could do whatever you want.
I hope one day you will find what you really love in your life that makes you happy.
Goals For My Senior Year
1-I want to recieve A+ in all subjects for the remainder of my highschool year to widen my chances in college acceptance.
2- Excel in Athletics to have the benenift of being healthy, while participating in team work.
3- To develop time management skills in order to succeed in life when faced with multi tasks at the same time and be able to do the best of my abilities.
4-Develop my advocacy skills and Polish my study skills in order to be able to be from the top students.
5-Volunteer in Hospital day care to help out and at the same time gain experience dealing with patients since becoming a physician is a possibility.
6-Aquire Technical Skills because Technical profeciency is an asset in any occupation.
7-Learn a new Language because when applying to a job position, people who can speak a variety of langauges are more likely to get the job than these who averagely speak their mother language.
8- Learn how to plan ahead and not just wait unprepared for what to come so that there won't come a time of crisis where you can't save yourself no more.
9-Make a lasting impression before garduating highschool so that I might have benefited my friend's lives in a good way that they would always remember me by.
10-Finally, I want to Know all about writing so that I could write exquisitely then publish my own book, for it to become one of the highest sold book, because I have always loved writing and creating a new world for the reader that would pull him in and make him sit on the edge of his chair, anxiously reading the plots and twists within the story, till he reaches the mind blowing end.
Shirely, I want to be your reader if you publish your book.
My goals for this semester are pretty simple. I have to do better than the last semester. Last semester, my grades were pretty bad. So after the finals, I realized that I still have a semester to raise my grades and I’m not going to mess up while I have a chance. Another thing I've got to do during this semester is I have to figure out what I really want to do in life. I’m finishing my high school in less then six months and it’s time to choose my own career path. This would be the first time making my biggest decision and I don’t want to regret what I choose in life. It’s really important because if I choose a wrong major in college not only I’ll be wasting a lot of money but also time I've given to study that major. And I don’t want to make that kind of mistake in life. Before I set off for community college, I need to improve my writing and communication skills so that I wouldn't face much difficulty when I get there. One last thing I’m doing is that I’m spending my very first spring break with my cousins and we’re going to the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival. All my favorite DJs are performing this spring. And I’m sure it’s going to be very epic spring break.
when people have the hardworking thought, it always a good start. I believe you will be successful before the end of graduation.
This year is my last year of high school career, and this new semester also is the last semester of my senior year. In fact, I really do not want to graduate from high school because I still want to enjoy the high school life and I do not want to be separated with my friends. Even though I do not to graduate, but I can not prevent it.
In this semester, I have some goals for myself. I hope these goals can be the dynamic that supervise me struggle. The one of them is my secret goal. It disturbs me for a very long time, almost a year. But now, I still keep this goal in my heart. I know it is impossible to achieve, but I don't mind if it exist in my heart forever. I would like to let you know that I have this kind of goal, but I don't want to tell you the detail. HAHA...
Another goal is the biggest goal for me at the moment which is I want to get to the college then back to China in order to visit my family. I have been in the United States for 3 years, but I never come back to China. I really miss all of the conversant people to me in China. In my dream, I want to send them a surprise when I'm back to China. I will not tell them the new because I want to move secretly. I can even image how happy would they be if I'm back. But I think this will not be achieved for the time being.
It doesn't matter because I am still struggling for not only for the goal of backing China, but also for my biggest sevret goal.
I understand you feeling, high school time is the most happiest time in our life.
I have been considering my goal for few years, but I still do not figure out what do I want to do. I mean I have a couple of goals, but I don’t know which one I really want to be. Doctor, Artists or some job needs math are my goals that I want to be.
The new semester is started. The enthusiasm and energetic are around the school. This semester is my last semester in high school, so it means I have to graduate from high school this years. Honestly, I started terrifying to graduated from high school, but I still have to face it. Therefore, I trying to plan some goal to make my senior year goes easier.
Actually, I don’t satisfy my last semester’s grade. That’s is bad to me. I think you may know the Chinese parents are so care about their children’s grade, so if you got a C or probably B, they will constantly ask you some problems about you grade. Sometime, they would like to compare their children which one did better and which not. I hate that, but even they don’t do that, I still not satisfy the works I have did in last semester. So I decide I can’t get a C in this last semester do a great job in my senior project. There are the only things I want. It’s pretty short and simple.
Friends always stay with you, we will help you when you misunderstand some works. That's working hard together, and have a unforgettable graduation memory
One Step at a Time - My Goals for 2014
It is time to begin a new semester in Arcadia High School. I have to find new goals and discover what I would like to happen in this year. Having goals always helps me stay motivated in my life. For 2014, I would like to improve on my English skill, complete the school mural and attend the UCLA dance marathon.
During the second semester, I want to read more fantasy novels with colorful graphics, because it can develop my reading and art-designing skills. I hope I could finish the "Harry Potter" series before I graduate. Also, I want to improve my speaking skills and build more confidences. It is hard to make myself speak when I don't feel confident, but to get better at speaking English, I have to practice more. I hope I can be brave to jump into the conversation and speak more fluently and smoothly. Most importantly, I want to build the foundation of English and develop my writing skills. I plan to do some writing everyday by keeping a journal. I heard about that college require to write long essay so I must to do some works to prepare.
For my art class, I want to finish a school mural title "whale expression" before June. The mural is on the school building F roll. I submitted the idea for my art work to the school last semester. It is an abstract painting with two whales and a person floating in the same space. The size of the mural is twenty times twelve feet, a large painting for me to complete. I hope I can work on it for one hour each day. This is a special memory and experience for me in my high school life. I will take the pictures of my painting everyday and use the smart phone application, "Cute Cut," to make an animation. Hopefully, I will put this project in my portfolio.
My last goal is to join the UCLA dance marathon. This is a charity event recommended by my older cousin, Lucy. It is a twenty-six hour dance concert, as well as a fundraising event for the AIDS research. For my goal, I want to donate one hundred and fifty dollars to the charity event before June. To reach this goal, I will submit some of my art works to a newspaper company in Taiwan. If the newspaper publishes my work, I will receive thirty dollars as reward. It is a meaningful and special event for me to join this kind of activities. Even thought I do not have any friends or family affected by this disease, it is still a good way to contribute for the society.
The benefit of doing those works is that I may grow up and be more stronger than before. I may shape myself and touch other lives. Although these all seem like big projects, I hope I can reach my goals one step at a time during this semester. I must believe in myself that I will complete them.
It was the second year that I’ve been here. All the things that I should adapt were already adapted. My goal for last year is to suit in the life in America since I’m a person who needs more time to adapt a new life which without my family members living with me. For this year, I’m moving forward a little bit, or I must move forward I should say.
Of course, the most important goal for this year, senior year, is to graduate from high school, successfully go to college and get on my next step to achieve my dream. I’m sure that graduating from high school is not a problem at all, but have I mentally prepared for going to college yet? I’m so doubt about it. Even at this time, I’m still thinking that I am a girl who always needs help from people. But the truth is, once I step into college, I’m already an adult. Everyone around me is fighting for their dream and goals. I can’t be that silly anymore, as college is a whole different game compare to high school. Being a college student needs to be independent, automatic and carry definite view on their own, which are the characteristics that I don’t have! Therefore, the most important goal for me in this semester is to prepare what I’m not ready in my heart.
Furthermore, I need to affirm my dream career. I know what my dream career is at this point which is being a pharmacologist. I really want to become a pharmacologist because I really love science and chemistry, but I don’t think it is the main reason for me to achieve it. Behind a successful scientist, there must be a strong reason for him to push himself up to the limit that he has. Although I really love chemistry, I don’t think it is the reason to be a pharmacologist. I will do more research for this job and make myself more confirm to this dream but not just saying I want to be a pharmacologist verbally.
Except for striving for future, I also have a little goal for myself physically. I want to lose weight. I want to become healthier than before. Therefore, I set a quantitative goal for myself. If I can achieve it successfully, no more problems can challenge me, no matter on academic or anything else. This goal is very crucial as it reflects my future, whether I can be a successful person or not. It requires so much aspiration and conviction. By doing this, I can test my endurance for making the goals that I set for myself.
Life without parents is like a garden without a fence around it! I can understand your feeling.
Anda, I must tell you that " college phase " as I call it is the most confusing phase I know even worse than hitting puberty believe me but I believe that once you set your mind on achieving it there will be nothing that can keep you from it.
Thank you remind me that! I will try my best to learn:)

I had been in this high school from 3 years and 6 month already; I want to do something meaningful before I graduate, because high school is the most happiest in our life. We do have to do lots homework, but that just paper work. It doesn't matter that much if we failed one of the test, it just a test, but after we grew up, a tiny little we did might cause a huge problem, it might failed our future. Since this is the last semester in high school, I should start preparing for my future. College is the start point. My goal for my last 22 weeks in high school is I want my writing skill to become better since I heard that college is much difficult than high school. Lots of my friends who also graduate from here and went to different college, they didn't work that hard in high school and it’s difficult for them to handle all the work in college. I really want to improve myself so I can do better when it’s my turn. Also before I graduate, I want to find a part time job so I can be more independent from my parents. People said that people will get mature when you are learning to be independent. I turned 18 years old since last October; I want to have more freedom, I want to make my own decision. I hope one day between those 22 weeks, I could achieve my goal.
Goals for this semester (Dawer Mir)
1. I want to try harder this semester to bring my grades since last semester I didn't really do anything productive at school
2. I don't want to miss to many days of school this semester because I was truant for so many days the prier semester
3. I want to actually get done with my driver license class since I have barely started on it
4. My goal outside of school is to gain weight since I'm going to the gym everyday and I'm eating a lot.
5. One of my other goals is to stop being shy and start to talk to more people than before.
6. I want to limit the hours I play my LOL game since I got really addicted to it
7. I just want to be more respectful to teachers because I really wasn't do anything in class which is rude and want to make up for it by doing good this semester
