Emerson states that the universe is full of good, but still insists that one cannot rely solely on fate if they want to succeed in the world. It is up to us to shape our own lives through our own actions.
"What I must do is all that concerns me, not what the people think...because you will find those who think they know what is your duty better than you know it..."
This kind of relates to my principle of how I should protect what I believe in no matter what others think about it. Although sometimes the influence of others is a good thing, when you rely on them to much, you lose your individuality.
He says "What I must do is all that concerns me, not what the people think...", and I don't agree with it; I think people should listen to other people and think about their opinions before doning something, especially things that would affect other people's lives.
"it is easy in solitude to live after our own; but the great man is he who in the midst of the crowd keeps with perfect sweetness the independence of solitude."
This quote appeals to me because it tells us that it is always easy to follow your friends and abide by their choices but in the process you would lose a piece of yourself that makes you who you are. Emerson is stating that a great man is someone who knows how to follow the crowd but at the same time keep your individuality that makes each person different from one another.
"A man is relieved and gay when he has put his heart into his work and done his best; but what he has said or done otherwise, shall give him no peace. It is a deliverance which does not deliver."
This appeals to me because it mentions how someone is not going to be happy with themselves unless they have tried their best. when you know there was nothing else that could have been done because otherwise you will always be thinking "what if..." and it will always be lingering in the back of your mind and you will have no peace of mind.
This phrase appeals to me because I believe it's important to be yourself and not to follow the crowd. Following the crowd will result in a bland, uniform society and you not being happy because you're not being what you really want. When you imitate other's, in a way you are "killing" yourself. One's unique traits makes them special and stand out.
"Trust thyself: every heart vibrates to that iron string"
I chose this specific quote from Emerson's excerpt of "Self-Reliance" because it is telling us to trust our beliefs because that is what will truly make us happy with ourselves. "Trust thyself" means to trust yourself while "every heart vibrates to that iron string" is saying that your heart is connected to that trust in yourself. You can only be satisfied with yourself if you have the confidence in yourself and your instincts.
"A man is relieved and gay when he has put his heart into his work and done his best"
I atotally agree with it. Every time I do my favorite rtwork, I put all my heart and attention on it, and I enjoy the feeling of that time. I think the most valuable thing is not the art work I've done but the joy it brings to me.
"No law can be sacred to me but that of my nature. Good and bad are but names very readily transferable to that or this; the only right is what is after my constitution, the only wrong what is against it."
I think what Emerson means by this quote is that your state of mind shouldn't conform to society's because compliance with what society states as good or bad is disrespecting yourself for not believing in your own constitution. so you should stand up for your own beliefs even if it means standing alone.
"What I must do is all that concerns me, not what the people think...you will always find those who think they know what is your duty better than you know it."
I agree with this quote because there are many people who believe they know what is best for you. But the the truth is no one knows you better than you. Our parents often choose our paths for the future because they think their way is right. We should be able to do what makes us happy and content with our lives, even if it may not satisfy our parents.
"You will always find those who think they know what is your duty better than you know it. It is easy in the world to live after the world's opinion..."
This quote stands out to me because it's relevant to everyone. There will always be people in your life who are constantly trying to sway your opinion and make your choices for you. It's easy to conform to the world, but by doing so you'll lose your own identity.
“What I must do is all that concerns me, not what the people think… equally arduous in actual and intellectual life, may serve for the whole distinction between greatness and meanness.”
I like this particular quote since I find it quite true in this society. I notice that being you and doing what you think is right is tough since there are many people in the world who think they know what is good for you. Yet if you stay independent and make your own choices, then you are a step ahead of many people.
"Society everywhere is in conspiracy against the manhood of every one of its members."
I think that in this quote, Emerson was explaining that society likes conformity. Those who are accepted aren't the ones who stick out or who dress differently, but the ones who comply with the standards of society. Our society is all about conformity and consistency from person to person, which is quite a corrupt thought. This quote stood out to me because I feel like pressure to fit can be extremely high, just because we feel the need to fit in with everyone else and be "accepted" by society around us.
"you will always find those who think they know what is your duty better than you know it"
I like this quote because it is very true in today's society. there will always be time were you listen to what other people say because it is for the good of you, but there are people that may give bad idea intentionally or accidentally. when it comes down to a situation like that the only person you should listen to is yourself.
"No law can be sacred to me but that of my nature. "
this quote appeals to me because in this quote, Emerson basically says that he is the only person that knows his restrictions and his restrictions are the only ones that matter.
i think this should be applied to everybody's life because living under other people's rules/laws can crush one's pride by limiting his/her talents and stopping him/her from reaching his/her goals.
