"It is easy in the world to live after the world's opinion; it is easy in solitude to live after our own; but the great man is he who in the midst of the crowd keeps with perfect sweetness the independence of solitude."
The reason why I like this quote is because it shows how you need to be yourself and not care what people think, or at least thats how i interpreted it. I feel like it is always important to be a leader, and always do and act like you feel is right. This quote really depicts all the things i believe people should strive to be like in life.
"'Ah, so you shall be sure to be misunderstood.' — Is it so bad, then, to be misunderstood? Pythagoras was misunderstood, and Socrates, and Jesus, and Luther, and Copernicus, and Galileo, and Newton, and every pure and wise spirit that ever took flesh. To be great is to be misunderstood."
-Ralph W. Emerson
I find the truth in Emerson's words. Many of the great men Emerson listed all have one thing in common: they are different from others around them. Society contains both the good and the bad, and with them amassed together, it becomes a giant, heaping glob of average. To conform is to be average. Difference is what defines greatness.
“that imitation is suicide”
This quote appeals to me because it portrays the reality of how individualism defines who you are. If people all strived to be the same thing, then what's the point of even having your own name? Be who you are so then you can live your own life without the influence of others.
"We but half express ourselves, and are ashamed of that divine idea which each of us represents."
I definitely agree with Emerson's words here because in life, people are afraid of being who they truly are, thinking that they might not be accepted. They're scared that however they may act, whatever they do, or the person they are, will never be 'good' enough for society. This, not only leading them to act differently, but also not knowing who they really are.
"the power which resides in him is new in nature, and none but he knows what that is which he can do, nor does he know until he has tried."
This merely implies that nobody knows what you are capable of doing, not even yourself that is, until you make the effort to try, and believe in yourself first. you can't expect others to know of your abilities, if you are not even willing to try firsthand.
I find these two words fascinating because he is giving us a simple action that's very complicated to abide by. We must trust ourselves because only we know what's good or bad for us and if we trust ourselves, our hearts will lead us to our appropriate path.
"Nothing is at sacred but the integrity of your own mind. Absolve you to yourself, and you shall have the suffrage of the world..."
I chose this quote though most people may not know it, your own mind is one of the most powerful things you have control of. If you let your mind think freely and not hold back, that means you trust yourself for who you are. Once people finally find the key to accepting themselves, they can make a difference and have a place in this world.
"Nothing can bring you peace but yourself. Nothing can bring you peace but the triumph of principles." This goes back to the title of this whole piece, self-reliance. You can only rely on yourself. One cannot wait around for somebody else to help you succeed because when it comes down to it, you will not achieve if you do not believe.... (in yourself)... I wanted it to rhyme so that's why "in yourself" is in parenthesis...
"Pythagoras was misunderstood, and Socrates, and Jesus, and Luther, and Copernicus, and Galileo, and Newton, and every pure and wise spirit that ever took flesh. To be great is to be misunderstood..."
Not everyone will see and understand the things you do and believe in but that shouldn't hold you back. Every new idea and belief may be a strange thought to many at first but go for it and have full confidence in yourself because if you don't, the world may be missing out on something great.
"... that imitation is suicide; that he must take himself for better, for worse, as his portion;"
I like this quote because I really value individuality and self acceptance. I think it's impossible to be happy if you can't accept yourself for who you are. Be your own person! Don't waste time trying to e someone you aren't. If people can't love you for who you are then they aren't worth it.
