Are you an internet addict?

Welcome back to blogging!

For our discussion this week, we turn to the Washington Post, whose article about internet addiction got me thinking.  What is the definition of addiction?  Can a person be addicted to the internet?  Finally, do you think it is the role of a government to aggressively "treat" internet addicts?

Please read the article and respond to these questions by classtime on Friday.

What is the definition of addiction? Addiction is the state of being enslaved to a habit or practice or to something that is psychologically or physically habit-forming, as narcotics, to such an extent that its cessation causes severe trauma.

Can a person be addicted to the internet? Yes.

Finally, do you think it is the role of a government to aggressively "treat" internet addicts? No. It's their own business that they're stuck to the computer; they don;t need another problem sticking up in their agenda.

  2. Margarita(Beech) M. says:

(*What is the definition of addiction?*)
Something you cannot necessarly control. It's like a habit of yours.

(*Can a person be addicted to the internet?*)
Yes, if i say so myself...

(*Finally, do you think it is the role of a government to aggressively "treat" internet addicts?*) No, because i thought they should of just left the internet addicts alone. It's basically their decision. They don't need a governement.

    #2 ;-)

  4. Sophia L. says:

Jacqueline beat you to it. xD

  5. Jonathan L. says:

Not really, I was just typing when all the words disappeared. Then I had to type it all over, and it took probably 8 minutes. So I kinda count as #2 :-P

  6. Chen C. says:

Hey Jonathan whats wrong? Dont you like to be first? Why are all these people beating you?

  7. Jonathan L. says:

    Don't have time lately...

  8. Hin Wai(Jacqueline) L. says:

What is the definition of addiction? I suppose the the definition of addiction is something that becomes habitual, and like Andy said, to something that is psychologically or physically.

Can a person be addicted to the internet? Yes.

Finally, do you think it is the role of a government to aggressively "treat" internet addicts? No. It's not their business to do so. If the person is addicted, then they're addicted. I'm pretty sure someone could stop when they want to. And if they don't want to stop...I suppose let them be.

  9. Jonathan L. says:

The definition of addiction is when one constantly does something habitual of physocological.

A person can get addicted. For example in the news, a guy used the internet for three straight days without water, food and sleep. He died at the third day.

Finally, do you think it is the role of a government to aggressively "treat" internet addicts? No because they should mind their own buisness and don't bother about other people, though internet is harmful if a person gets addicted. If they were really addicted, someone would probably suggest to him to see the physcologist. Otherwise if he's not addicted, I would suggest not the government to bother them.

  10. Amy W. says:

(*What is the definition of addiction?*)
I think the best definition for [internet] addiction is: "The condition of being habitually or compulsively occupied with or or involved in something." which I found on dictionary.com. Addiction is when one is practically obsessed with something, and without it, the person may feel depressed, unmotivated, angry, etc.

(*Can a person be addicted to the internet?*)
Yes, I supposed a person could be "addicted" to the internet. For normal people, the "addiction" probably wouldn't be too severe and they wouldn't go crazy without the internet. I think that only in extreme cases do people actually suffer physically or mentally (excluding lack of exercise) from being addicted to the internet.

(*Finally, do you think it is the role of a government to aggressively "treat" internet addicts?*)
No. I was pretty surprised after reading the article about the internet addiction rehab clinics in China, because I feel that it is too extreme to technically imprison these teens for being so called "addicted" to the internet. Of course, I understand that parents in China are much more strict and want their children to put all their time and effort into their education, but I don't think these teens should be treated as if they were addicted to drugs or alcohol. In the United States, if these internet addiction rehab clinics actually existed, just imagine how many people would be held there. In a sense, I find that it's quite ridiculous that the Chinese government is doing this, because it's such an overreactment.

  11. Thet H. says:

What is the definition of addiction?
Addiction is when you are uncontrollably fixed or focused on something and can't stop.

Can a person be addicted to the internet?
Yes, I think a person can be addicted to the internet because it is so easy to use.

Finally, do you think it is the role of a government to aggressively "treat" internet addicts?
No, because treating addiction to the internet isn't the same as treating addiction to something like smoking. Unlike addiction to smoking, addiction to the internet doesn't endanger your life or cause any health problems.

  12. Cheng Chi(Jonathan) C. says:

What is the definition of addiction?

The definition of addiction is the over use of stimuli, creating a mental and physical need.

Can a person be addicted to the internet?

Theoretically speaking, yes, but the extent of it would be fatal to the body to reach that point.

Finally, do you think it is the role of a government to aggressively "treat" internet addicts?

There really is no way to treat an addiction aggressively, due to the fact that to fight it would mean having the need for superior will-power. A perfect example would be Sigmund Freud, the "father of psycology", was able to resist cocaine and nearly benefitted him with it's use for eye sugery, though when he gave his friend cocaine, his friend suffered with a great addiction.

  13. Laureen M. says:

The best "off the top of my head" definition of addiction would be something that you have to have and you crave it 24/7. If you don't get it, something happens to you.

I think a person can get addicted to the internet/computer because there is so much to explore and see on the web.

I was really surprised to find out that China had clinics to treat this "addiction." I don't think it is their responsibility to treat these people because shocking/violence/drugs is definitly not the answer.

  14. Priscilla C. says:

What is the definition of addiction?
The definition of an addiction is when a person is seriously obssessed with something and can't stop.

Can a person be addicted to the internet?
Yes. It's really easy to get addicted to the internet if someone is using it constantly.

Finally, do you think it is the role of a government to aggressively "treat" internet addicts?
No. It's not the government's problem. It's the person's problem.

  15. Mitchell P. says:

I think addiction is when you use a substance that makes you feel good to the point where if you stop your cells physically suffer.

I don't think its impossible to get addicted to the internet in the same was as smoking or crack cocaine, because it is not a substance. If someone was a constant internet addict and the power went out permanently, they would not physically suffer. However, they might be hurt mentally and maybe lose his marbles.

    I think the government, especiall
a communist one, has no right interfering with this. I personally believe in a laizzes faire government anyway.

  16. Nina L. says:

[What is the definition of addiction?]
I think the definition of addiction is basically "obsession". You cannont live without anything you are obsessed with.

[Can a person be addicted to the internet?]
Of course. That's normal, I guess. I mean it's like MapleStory and I. It's like very addicting because you want to level or something. My mom limits my computer time to one hour because she doesn't want me to play all day without any reading or studying. She also thinks my eyes will get more "blind". I'm also addicted to YouTube because it's like "FREE MOVIES"!

[Finally, do you think it is the role of a government to aggressively "treat" internet addicts?]
I don't think the government has to do anything to treat internet addicts, that's why we have parents. I guess the threat to the child/children is that they can "cancel/cut" the internet line. My mom tells me that all the time. Basically, parents can help by limiting their computer time.

  17. Nina L. says:

[Finally, do you think it is the role of a government to aggressively "treat" internet addicts?]
I also want to add something. :-)
In the China story, the government shouldn't have rehabs for internet addicts. They should mind their own buisness because it's their life. They also shouldn't treat these as drugs/alcohol. Anyone can be addicted to anything. Chocolate, coffee, soda, games, and Internet.

  18. Sophia L. says:

What is the definition of addiction? To me, addiction is when a person does something that gets to the level of losing self-control.
Can a person be addicted to the internet? I think so if they can't find happiness in any other thing in life. Or if they have found something they can really connect to on the Internet.
Finally, do you think it is the role of a government to aggressively "treat" internet addicts? No, because I don't think they're suppose to be involved in this. The parents of internet addicts could help. But then, I guess, like in the article, for more extreme cases, a clinic would be needed. But if the cases are mild, I don't think that parents should send their children, especially if their children are unwilling.

I find it weird the parents are willing to spend so much money and that governments are only paying attention to internet and not anything else just as simple as food, games, etc.

  19. Jasmine W. says:

::What is the definition of addiction?:: According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, “compulsive need for and use of a habit-forming substance or item characterized by tolerance and by well-defined physiological symptoms upon withdrawal”. ((Blink)) I think in a nutshell (Woot! I used one of Mr. Klotzle’s idioms! xD), it’s to be so drawn to something that it disturbs you either physically or psychologically (like everyone else said :|) if you stay away from it too long.

::Can a person be addicted to the internet?:: I think so, because the dictionary defines it as a compulsive need and yadahdah you know the rest. Some people do have a compulsive need to be online 24/7, and obviously, that gets them into a habit. I’ve known some internet-“addicts” who are easily distracted from things they’re supposed to be doing when they’re not on the internet.

::Finally, do you think it is the role of a government to aggressively "treat" internet addicts?:: No. O.O The way the other countries like China handle it is waaay too aggressive, and, luckily, our country isn’t that aggressive :-D. I think the government should somehow do something that will get people off the internet and do something more productive... I’m not sure how they would do that, though... ^^’’ I think something that our country would be capable of doing, though, is making internet service cost more. I heard that in some places, the prices of water went up in hopes of people stop wasting it. It worked, which was good because it conserved water, but it wasn’t 100% faulty-proof, because the water prices were REALLY high...

  20. I-Yao(Allen) H. says:

What is the definition of addiction?
When you get in a habit of doing that one thing and don't want to stop doing that thing

Can a person be addicted to the internet? yes

Finally, do you think it is the role of a government to aggressively "treat" internet addicts?

No it's not because using internet is the user's own choice and the user paid their own money for the internet connection.

  21. Chen C. says:

If people are really addicted to the inter net, I dont blame them. A person can be addicted to the internet if they continue to find interesting things that suits him or her. Take exxample like games. Don't people get excited when they gain a level or blowing up an alien or find a friend on the net? That exactly what happens. To end the addiction however, they must forget about the computer forever and ever and ever and ever. The people who created the internet wish people use the internet more often but not too much. The goverment can't control what people doing around the world on the internet. Even if they threatend the people to stop using the internet, people around the world will be in a outrage. I'm sure nobody would like to be blamed for. Who wouldn't want to use the internet with all it's movies, chatting rooms, video games, soundtracks, news, commericials and more. We're depending on the internet more and more. In the future, more people will add to the internet which will cut off more and more to social life. We denpend on the internet to find information that is important to us. If we continue to use the internet, I think there will be major dangers in the internet. Then we would all have shut down the internet and people will have to use their brains more than depending on the internet.

  22. Joshua(Josh) M. says:

Definition of Addiction:The condition of being habitually or compulsively occupied with or or involved in something.

I think that a person can be addicted to the internet. Of course there are many ways in which they can be addicted to the internet. I think that most people are easily addicted to web 2.0 which we discussed in class today.

I personally think that there is no point in treating internet addicts because either way everyone uses internet in their lives whether it be online shopping to myspace. So in my point of view I think that it is pointless in the government wasting money to treat something that is as simple as constantly being on the internet.

What is the definition of addiction?
The definition of addiction is being enslaved to something. I think it means that someone cannot live without something, and they become ill or depressed because they can't do something.

Can a person be addicted to the internet?
    Definitely.

Finally, do you think it is the role of a government to aggressively "treat" internet addicts?
I think that the government should teat some people who are seriously addicted to the internet, but not so aggressively as isolation or shocking kids.

  25. Tony H. says:

The definition of addiction- is the state of being enslaved to a habit or practice or to something that is psychologically or physically habit-forming. I got the definition from dictionary.com
Can some one be addicted to the internet?
Yes. I am an addict too but I'm not using it as much because I'm addicted to my Nintendo Ds now.
I don't think that think it is the role of a government to aggressively treat internet addicts because it is not against the law.
If it was against the law then the government could .

Can a person be addicted to the internet? Yes.

Finally, do you think it is the role of a government to aggressively "treat"
    internet addicts?
No, because it is the persons choice to use the internet and the government doesn't have the right to come in and use aggressive techniques to (*try*) to cure addicts.

can a person be addicted to the internet?
I dont really want to say this but.. most of my friends are actually internet addicted.

finally, do you think it is the role of a government to aggressively "treat" internet addicts?
wow, do really goverments really have that much of time to treat internet addicts? they should just get homeless people's jobs if they have money to treat internet addicts.(in my opinion)

  30. Garrick K. says:

Heh... I forgot to do the post again... =\

What is the definition of addiction? Can a person be addicted to the internet? Finally, do you think it is the role of a government to aggressively "treat" internet addicts?

Well I think that the definition on addiction is being "hooked" onto something, so it is very hard to let go. Yes a person can be addicted to the Internet. No I don't think that the government is supposed to do that because it's the person's own fault, and Internet addiction doesn't hurt others, like smoking and drinking.

  31. Garrick K. says:

  35. Chun Hsien(Kenny) L. says:

What is the definition of addiction? Can a person be addicted to the internet? Finally, do you think it is the role of a government to aggressively "treat" internet addicts?

The definition is attraction that's so strong that one can't resist. Yes, a person can be well addicted to the internet. In fact, a lot of people are addicted as well. I think it is the government's responsibility to prevent addictions to the internet, but I also think that there is nothing it can do to do so.

Finally, do you think it is the role of a government to aggressively "treat" internet addicts?
No, being an awful lawbreaker myself, like ignoring "No Parking" and "No Eating/Drinking" signs, I think that government should help people live, not determine how people live, SLAVERY IS BAD!!

  38. Dianna K. says:
